Twitter Emergency Alerts

In 2013 Twitter Alerts was introduced with the purpose of “helping users get important and accurate information from credible organizations during emergencies, natural disasters or moments when other communications services aren’t accessible.”  The goal is to help Twitter users to get reliable information in cases of emergency.

 

Useful in Real Crisis Situations

Twitter has been used extensively to disseminate critical information during several natural disasters and crises including, but not limited to, Hurricane Sandy, the Boston Marathon Bombing, and Japan’s 2011 Tsunami.  Twitter Alerts are intended for times of crisis, disaster, and emergency communications, the participating government agencies and other organizations determine what alerts are sent out.

 

Twitter Alerts activated will help you get essential information when you need it in two simple steps:

  1. During a crisis or emergency, the Twitter Alert account(s) you have subscribed to will send you a Twitter Alert.
  2. The Twitter Alerts will be time-sensitive, critical information related to the unfolding event.

 

Twitter says, “To receive Twitter Alerts as push notifications, you must be using Twitter for iPhone version 5.10 or higher, and Twitter for Android 4.1.6 or higher.”

 

Not Only FEMA

Twitter Alerts are available in the following countries: United States, Ireland, Australia, Brazil, Spain, United Kingdom, Japan, and Korea.  They promise to add other countries in the future.  This link gets you to the most current list of countries and organizations participating in the Twitter Alerts.  You will also find participating U.S. federal and state government agencies.

FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) operates several Twitter accounts.  You can subscribe to the master twitter account (@fema) or any of the 10 FEMA regions that cover the U.S. and Pacific Islands.

One interesting organization that participates in Twitter Alerts is “Flu Near You”, a crowd sourced flu map that allows you to report having the flu and then adds your case of the flu to a dynamic map that allows the visual mapping of flu outbreaks around the U.S. and Canada.
